Sammy will be gettin Hurricanes tender shortly, when someone can get it painted, which is quite hard, as i heard that a private company at Hythe (Crowhurst Engineering) would be taking the job, but they have Hurricane being rebuilt in there now so it may have to wait???? Hurricane will never have Sammy's tender, as the railway are tryin to rule out the short tenders, which is why Samson hasnt been in service. A few new tenders r bein built. Cya m8

Even if someone was photographing this train that was about to leave at this exact spot, it would've left the way the photographer is facing. If this train was to move past the photographer it would end up crashing into buffers.

Ive been to the east kent railway when you had the ghost trains runing. I was speaking to an old member of staff and he had told me and two other work collegues that the railway was starting to stragle with money. He also stated that they were going into talks about selling two of there diesel units to save cost and run some of their electric units instead.
[#8698855] 2007-11-25 18:50:57 Left by Tom Peters (#0) Reply
There is some truth about the the two diesel units up for sell one is a ex East Kent Railway Diesel that left a few years ago. But the other one I still havent found out what one it is yet. All I know it is one that they use it some times and that iit s owned by the Railway not a private member. So it is not the 427 then.

[#8734817] 2008-04-17 16:38:03 Left by Josh (#0) Reply
Basically, they can run any day of the week, usually thursdays or wednesdays. They depart Dungeness udually at 16.30 but can sometimes run upto 2 hours early. They use either class 20's or 37's, or occasionally a mixture of the two. Only thing is, you can never be certain when they will be running, as DRS and Network Rail keep this train top secret due to its nucleur load. Best thing to do though is, sign up to Se-Gen (type it into Google) and you will recieve updates on rare trains and workings, and timings for trains that you wouldnt know about otherwise. Its great, and its free! If you did sign up, look out for an email saying about 6M95 or something, which is usally the train code for the return working. Cheers Josh

No problem I wouldnt have thought it would be back until around March time... possibly a bit later, depending on progress. Possibly the same time as Green Goddess... but thats just an estimate. Could take longer.

Thanks to George Ovenden, the Canterbury and District Society of Model and Experimental Engineers were able to enjoy a day at Snowdown, riding the two locomotives in steam; St.Thomas (identical to St.Dunstans) and an Austerity. This would have been in 1980 or '81. The driver of one of the locos joked 'There is Forty Year's of coal left in Snowdown but it will take Four Hundred Years to dig it out!' He let us take turns on the regulator. I told him that I'd do his job (under instruction of course) for three months at no pay and he though I was joking. I wasn't! I could not have been more serious. Eventually both locomotives were coupled up as a 'double header' and we pulled a reasonably long rake of empties as passengers in a passing electic train looked on in surprise. Wonderful day! I was amazed at how few tools were needed to keep them steaming: a set of heavy wrenches, heavy plein hammers, caulking (?) chisel, gas welding set, pillar drill (I think), a heavy vice and that was about it. The clearances in the coupling rod bearings were generous, maybe in recognition of inequalities in the track, but both locos were steam-tight. The fire-bed was kept thinner than I had expected (knowing nothing about firing myself). It was fantastic to be on the footplate of a steam locomotive on the move, even if we hardly went faster than 15 mph! Did St Thomas survive as well as St Dunstans. And what happened to the Austerity? I'll always be grateful to George Ovenden who I remember as a good model engineer and a very friendly person. A few months later the colliery engineer let me on site to photograph the Avonsides again by which time one had been resprayed in light blue (as seen here, but not weathered).

Lovely stuff! St Thomas I believe is preserved outside the Dover Transport Museum. There was another loco called St Martin I believe, but I expect that has either been scrapped, or preserved under a different identity.

The 31 in this shot is not 31105. It's either 31233 or 31285. 31105 is a 'skinhead' 31 meaning it has no headcode box at the top of the cab unlike the one in this shot.
